Robert Lewandowski, Barcelona’s star striker, has openly discussed his future retirement plans, despite continuing to deliver impressive performances in La Liga. With his contract at Camp Nou running until 2026, Lewandowski hinted that his playing career could continue for a few more years before he ultimately hangs up his boots.
Since joining Barcelona from Bayern Munich in 2022, the Polish forward has consistently proven himself as one of the world’s top goal scorers. This season alone, Lewandowski has netted 19 goals in 17 appearances across all competitions, playing a crucial role in helping Barcelona lead the La Liga standings with a six-point advantage.
The End of an Era: Lewandowski’s Retirement Thoughts
In a candid interview with Forbes, Lewandowski admitted that the end of his career is approaching, although he’s not sure exactly when that will happen. “At my age, I know that in two or three years, I’m not exactly sure when, it will all be over,” he shared.
However, Lewandowski emphasized that the decision on when to retire will be entirely his. “I want to decide when it’s the right time to end my career, and it will be my decision, not anyone else’s. When I wake up one morning and no longer feel like going to training, that’s when I’ll start thinking about retirement,” he explained.
Is Barcelona Already Preparing for Lewandowski’s Departure?
Knowing that Lewandowski won’t be around forever as Barcelona’s primary striker, the club has begun considering potential replacements. Barcelona’s sporting director, Deco, has mentioned players like Victor Gyokeres and Erling Haaland as potential options to step into Lewandowski’s shoes.
“It’s difficult to find a striker like Robert nowadays. There may be one or two players on his level. Maybe Haaland or someone else,” Deco told Mundo Deportivo.
Lewandowski has already scored 688 goals throughout his career, for both club and country, starting with Znik Pruszkow in the lower leagues of Poland. With his legacy as one of the greatest goal scorers of all time firmly established, Lewandowski still has the opportunity to add more goals to his tally, with Barcelona set to face Celta Vigo in their next La Liga match.
